In France, the variety of food shopping are somewhat more open in comparison to the UK. Most towns have a thriving market, it comes with an artisan culture providing many excellent, value small shops, and a lot open at the outset of the morning, around 8am, closing at 7pm. There is commonly a two-hour lunchbreak, since French take their food very seriously indeed. Also, beware that different towns have a propensity to be closed on different days - often Monday or Thursday. Shopping on Public Holidays can be a no-no, everything is probably be firmly shut - look at the dates before you head, and plan ahead.
